Panther Valley principal resigns

Panther Valley Elementary School's principal is resigning from the job.

Mary Figura confirmed on Friday that she is leaving to take an administrator position in Schuylkill County.Her expected last day is Oct. 14. The district has already begun their search for a replacement.She served as Panther Valley Elementary School principal since the 2012-13 school year.Figura admitted the first week of school wasn't an ideal time to announce her resignation. But she pointed out that all student scheduling and placements will be in place for her successor.Figura said that the decision to leave the district was especially difficult because of the relationship she has with her students."I'm really going to miss them. The kids here are so awesome. It's the best part of being an elementary principal," she said.She is leaving to become curriculum coordinator for the Pine Grove School District in Schuylkill County.Figura oversaw the transition of the school to a K-3 building from K-5. Before that transition, many students had to be taught in modular classrooms outside the building.She praised her faculty and staff for having an impact on their students, even those from the neediest of homes."I actually feel we're doing top-notch work. The teachers put forth tons of extra effort," she said.Figura gave her notice after the most recent school board meeting. The board will vote on her resignation at the next meeting, Oct. 13.However, the district placed an advertisement for the 12-month position on Friday. According to the ad, applicants should have a current principal certification, with elementary school experience preferred. The deadline for applications is Sept. 28.
