Marian’s Fellin finishes second in the state in 60 meters

Big Meet Mike.

It’s a moniker befitting of Marian’s Mike Fellin.

The Marian senior took the track scene by storm last spring.

And he was no less sensational this winter.

Fellin capped his first-ever indoor track season with a second-place finish in the 60 meter dash at the PFTCA Indoor State Championships in State College late last month.

“To see Mike come out, and kind of pick up where he left off in the spring, especially with this being his first year actually competing in indoor, was exciting,” said Marian track and field head coach Justin Huegel. “We kind of didn’t know what to expect. We knew there were going to be some good things, but when he went out in his first meet and ran the Pa. No. 1 time in the 60, that he held onto until the state meet, was pretty exciting.”

Fellin’s sensational spring ended with a pair of state medals, along with several scintillating performances along the way.

On the biggest stage, Fellin powered his way to a second-place finish in the Class 2A 100 at the PIAA Track and Field Championships in May.

It was a run that nearly put him on the top step of the podium. Fellin’s time of 10.85 came in just behind Braedon Wisloski of Southern Columbia, who ran a 10.81 and needed a late surge in the race to secure the win.

Fellin stayed hungry – and stayed after his goals.

“I never stopped actually training,” he said. “Through last season and up to now, I’ve only taken two weeks off; one is because I went away to a place where I just could not run, and the other time I had surgery on my wisdom teeth, so I physically could not train. Those are the only two times.”

His preparation showed.

Fellin, who first stepped foot on an indoor track Dec. 11, cruised through the prelims and semis at the state meet with times of 6.95 and 6.84 (personal best) in the 60.

In the final, Fellin ran a 6.90, second to Norristown’s Jaden Brown.

“I never did indoor track and field, but I loved going into it,” said Fellin, who did four indoor meets during the winter. “Just because of the sport. I love it. I trust Coach Huegel with everything, and we went hard. I showed up to practice every day, never took days off. I really wanted to just prove myself once again, and that’s what I did.”

The defending Times News/Lehigh Valley Health Network Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year, Fellin showcased his sprinting prowess throughout the spring, capturing District 11 titles in the 100 and 200 (22.92) after winning Schuylkill League gold in both of his individual events and the 400 and 1600 relays.

In addition to the 60, Fellin also did the 200 early in the indoor season. He ran a 23.6 at the first meet, winning the race.

Fellin kept his head down, and took the indoor season as another opportunity to improve across the board.

“In the winter, there were a couple of bumps along the way. There are times you have to manage things with injuries, or manage things making sure you’re not overworking them too early,” said Huegel. “But to see him come out and be willing to work every day to get better, and then do as well as he did and not allow the expectations and the mantle he was carrying to get to his head.

“It was exciting for him, but at the same time, he came to practice every day willing to work, willing to get better. He was just willing to go out there and figure out what he needs to do to go from where he was at, to where he needed to be at the end of the year.”

His indoor accomplishments also marked another milestone for the Marian program.

“Running it as more of a workout period versus actual competition; it was just exciting to have somebody not only make it to that level, but to see them succeed at the state meet, to be able to do that,” said Huegel. “A couple of years ago, we had Tina Capparell be the first person to qualify for indoor states from the school, and was the first person to medal at indoor states. And now we have somebody on the guys’ side.

“It was just exciting to see what standard has now been set, for not only our elite athletes, but everybody in the program.”

Coming off a spring that put his name on the map across Pennsylvania and beyond, Fellin made his presence felt once again during the winter.

Whether established or unknown, Fellin is just enjoying the ride.

One that’s far from over.

“Being at states, despite the challenge and everything, it’s just so amazing to be there with everyone,” said Fellin. “It’s the best of the best. You have to be on such a grind to be there. And not just for me, but to see all the people I know, like Blue Mountain’s Olivia Haas. I got to talk to her a little bit, along with a few others.

“It’s just nice to be there. Despite getting silver again, I love the challenge, and I love everything that goes into the race itself. It’s just humbling to be there, because you work for it. And you can say, ‘I finally made it.’ It’s just another one of those experiences that I had.”

And it’s not likely to be the last.
