Coal truck spills load on I-81 in Schuylkill

State police at Hazleton reported investigating a crash along Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County involving a dump truck which spilled its load of coal on the roadway. Troopers said the crash occurred at 9:09 a.m. on Thursday in Kline Township.

Troopers said Alexia L. Wheary, 26, of Coal Township, Northumberland County, was operating a 2012 Peterbilt truck southbound in the right lane attempting to negotiate a left hand curve. The truck crossed onto the right shoulder, then back into the right lane. At this time the truck load of coal began to shift. The truck then crossed into the left lane causing Wheary to lose control. The truck overturned on its passenger side.

Wheary was extricated from the vehicle by emergency responders but claimed no injury. The coal the truck was carrying spilled across both lanes of the interstate.

The truck had to be towed. The left lane of the interstate was closed for two and a half hours until the spill was cleaned up.

Wheary was cited for accidents involving overturned vehicles - operated a commercial vehicle that overturned in an accident; driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed - drove a vehicle at a speed greater than was reasonable prudent under conditions; and driving on roadways laned for traffic - failed to drive within a single lane or movement from lane was not made safely.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by volunteers from the McAdoo Fire Company, Delano Fire Company and Hazle Township Fire Company along with a McAdoo EMS unit. PennDOT also had a crew on scene.
