Shelter set up for Lehighton residents affected by fire

Lehighton Borough is setting up a shelter for residents living in the vicinity of the fire today who are without electricity. The Lehighton Recreation Center located at 243 South 8th St. will be the location of the shelter.

Residents are being asked to leave faucets dripping over night to keep pipes from freezing if their power is out.

Some power will be restored tonight.

Lehighton Light & Power Department is trying to restore power to the lower end of Coal Street and the lower end of North 2nd Street.

Coal Street between 2nd and 3rd Street will be out of power until after the building is taken down.

Center Alley from Coal to Ochre will be without power over night.

Nine residents were displaced from their apartment when fire hit the unit shortly before midnight. Fire crews stayed on scene until after 3 a.m. and were called back for a rekindle at 8 a.m. They remained on the scene most of the day.
