Woman creates petition for borough to maintain alley

A Lehighton woman has started a petition so that she and her neighbors may safely travel an alley.

Whitney Schnell started the petition for Division Alley, which as of press time had 32 signatures. Schnell said her family, friends and neighbors live on Carbon Street, and many of them have back parking in Division Alley to their homes.

However, she said the borough doesn’t maintain the alley, making it difficult to get to it during the winter months.

“Some of us have fought for over 10-plus years to get it maintained, yet they still will not help us,” Schnell said. “They do not plow it, clean it or even pave it.

“They let it go as it sits. I’m petitioning to fight for us to get what we need to have safe travels for us and our vehicles.”

Schnell said the situation has been a source of frustration.

“I personally had to pay for a public street to be plowed for us and our neighbors when that should not be the case. Please help us fight for what we believe should be taken care of for the safety of our families.”

Taylor Minnich agreed.

“I am one of the residents that need to travel up this alley to access my driveway, and would absolutely love for it to be maintained properly, rather than having to walk across to Carbon Street or Second Street to park my car and walk home,” Minnich said. “What a wonderful idea.”

Contacted Monday afternoon, borough Manager Nicole Beckett said the borough has not received any petition to date.
