Jim Thorpers prepare for annual Tour de Shore
Between training and fundraising the Jim Thorpers are keeping very busy.
About 20 members of the bike team that will ride in the 30th annual Tour de Shore got together in Palmerton this past weekend to combine the two.First-year team member Dave Rodrigues organized a training ride for anyone interested in adding some miles to their training routine.Rodrigues, from Palmerton, planned the route's halfway point to be at Country Harvest on Delaware Avenue, where the store had drinks and fresh fruit for the riders.Store owner Sheri Anthony also presented a check for $500 to the team captain, Mike Dugan. At the end of the ride Rodrigues and his wife, Christine, welcomed all of the riders back to his house for refreshments provided by Dunbar Bottling. The Jim Thorpers team continues to grow each year. Starting with just two riders in 2011, the team has grown to 149 for this year's ride. The Thorpers are currently the second highest team in fundraising with a total of more than $43,000 and counting. The Tour de Shore is a 65-mile bicycle ride from the Irish Pub in Philadelphia to the Irish Pub in Atlantic City, which raises money for children in need and for the families of fallen police officers.Last year, nearly 2,500 riders took to the streets, breaking the $1 million mark for the first time. While the funds traditionally go to charities in the Philadelphia and New Jersey areas, more than $70,000 has come back to this area, including $65,000 given to the family of the late Pennsylvania State Police Cpl. Bryon Dixon, who was murdered while on the job in 2014.In addition to each team member seeking donations toward their $200 minimum needed to ride, the local team holds several fundraisers, the biggest so far this year being their annual basket raffle held in May.Team member Jack Krajcirik has high hopes for their next fundraiser, "Wine and Wheels" being held Saturdayat the Blue Lizard Vineyard and Winery in Andreas."One of our team members, Charlie Whitehead, had a great idea to hold this fundraiser with Blue Lizard, and I feel that it could be a very successful one for us," Krajcirik said, "The people at the winery have been great to deal with."The event will have live music, raffles and food and beverages available for purchase. For a $5 donation you can also get a wineglass and four tastings.Bus transportation from Jim Thorpe to the winery and back is available. For more questions on the "Wine and Wheels" event, you can contact the winery at 570-527-0925.
