Burglary suspect nabbed after Rush Township traffic stop

A traffic stop Tuesday led to the apprehension of a suspect in a gas station burglary earlier in the day.

Sgt. Duane Frederick, Rush Township police, said officers stopped a red Volkswagen Jetta and recognized that the vehicle

matched both the description and surveillance image of a car being sought in connection with a burglary at One Stop Fuel, 704 Claremont Ave., Hometown, which took place earlier in the day.

Police said the car was being driven by a family member at the time of the stop.

An ensuing investigation led police to identify Daniel Donovan, 41, of Tamaqua, as the man sought in the crime.

Police said they positively matched Donovan on the video surveillance, and then arrested him and charged him with burglary, criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, and driving a motor vehicle while DUI suspended.

Police said Donovan, when apprehended, was out on bail for previous incidents in Schuylkill and Carbon counties.

Donovan was arraigned before District Justice David J. Rossi of Tremont, who set bail at $100,000.00 cash. Donovan was unable to post bail and was lodged in Schuylkill County Prison.

He is charged in connection with a burglary at 4:04 a.m.

Police believe Donovan cut phone lines in the back of the building before smashing the front glass door to enter.

An investigation revealed that $3,000 in cigarettes and cash was taken from the business.
