Carbon inmates get tablets

Carbon County Prison officials are looking to implement a tablet system through the company that oversees the inmate phone system.

The Carbon County Prison Board, on Wednesday, voted to send a recommendation to the county commissioners to implement the tablets for inmate use through Global Tel*Link Corp. The company has operated the inmate phone system at the county prison since 2011.

Acting Warden Laura Banta, who officially ends her time in Carbon County on Dec. 23, said that the tablets will be provided at no cost to Carbon County, “and will generate additional commissions for the county.”

“The driving force for the implementation of table usage stems from enhancing the overall security of the facility by reducing the avenues for the introduction of contraband items, specifically by utilizing the features of video visitation and mail scanning,” Banta said.

The board looked at possibly implementing tablets for inmates in September 2020, but no formal action had been taken at the time.

Other business

In other matters, the board discussed or acted on the following items:

• Gave a letter thanking Banta for her time as acting warden.

• Sheriff Anthony Harvilla, who is retiring next year, thanked the board for everything. The meeting was Harvilla’s last meeting as board president and member.
