Weissport is turning 150 this summer and the borough council is hoping it isn't too late to plan a celebration.

Council member Brenda Leiby said according to an article she read on the Internet, the borough was incorporated on June 3, 1867.It was founded in 1792 by Col. Jacob Weiss, who with several business partners operated several coal mining operations. Weiss died in Weissport on January 9, 1839.Leiby said she is hoping some type of celebration can occur in the town to commemorate the 150th event."I know we can't do anything on the same scale as Lehighton, but we could have something small," she said.Lehighton celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2016 with numerous events, including a large parade.Weissport Borough Council agreed to refer the matter to its recreation committee.Linda Schoenberger, a member of the council and the recreation committee, said she will contact other committee members and attempt to have a meeting this month.Leiby said that a number of years ago, Weissport had what was called "Canal Days," where people displayed photos and artifacts from the past.She said she would like to see such a display for the borough's anniversary.Another suggestion was a festival with food stands.One person proposed that the dedication of the Betty Mullen Brey Memorial might occur in conjunction with the borough's anniversary.Brey was an Olympic medalist in swimming and won gold and silver medals in the Pan Am Games.The former Betty Mullen, she was raised in Weissport and graduated from Lehighton High School.She died on March 21, 2015.Family members and friends are planning a memorial for her to be placed in the Weissport Borough Park. The memorial was to have been installed last fall but was postponed because of production delays.Her son, Mike Brey, is the head basketball coach at Notre Dame University. Because of the basketball schedule, the installment of the memorial was delayed until this coming spring.Council members said they will contact the committee planning the dedication to see if it is possible to include it with the borough's sesquicentennial since Betty's heritage is so vital to the borough's history.
