America is starting to prepare the celebrations for its upcoming 250th anniversary in 2026.
On Thursday, James Logue Jr., the Carbon County representative for the America250PA, provided an update for the commissioners, who adopted a resolution supporting the effort.
America250PA is a state group created by the Legislature and Gov. Tom Wolf that aims to plan and coordinate the upcoming semiquincentennial for the nation.
Pennsylvania played an integral role in the formation of the United States, Logue said.
“It’s very fitting that Pennsylvania leads the way,” he said, noting that Pennsylvania was the first state to form an official commission and was the site of where the Declaration of Independence was signed.
Logue said the group has been meeting and a lot of activities are in the works.
One specific program Logue spoke about was the Liberty Tree Program, which will ask every county to plant a Liberty tree.
“It has something to do with the history of the nation … that people would gather at this tree,” he said.
A Facebook group page will be created in the near future, Logue said, and the commissioners offered to allow him use of the county page to disseminate information as well.
