NW, NL improve at Holiday Classic

BETHLEHEM It was a different tale for the likes of Northwestern and Northern Lehigh at this year's Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic. Both programs were shutout of the medal contention last year, but emerged from Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium with plenty of positives following the completion of wrestling Monday evening.

Northern Lehigh took home four medals from the tournament to lead all Times News participants, while Northwestern took home three medals to give both programs a boost heading in the new year."We didn't have any guys medal last year," said Nolehi head coach Steve Hluschak. "To have four guys medal, all of which are underclassmen, it's good for us. This is a quality tournament with a lot of good teams here. I think we had all of our guys win at least two matches during the tournament, so that's good for us."Matt Schmall (132, seventh), Ryan Farber (145, fifth), Conrad Young (152, fifth) and Cameron Kates (HWT, seventh) rounded out the Bulldog contingent of medalists, as Kates and Young each recorded falls in the medal round.Northwestern head coach Jim Moll saw Quentin Bernhard (120) and Jarrett White (126) take fifth, while Caleb Clymer (138) lost in the seventh place match, 5-3, against fellow Times News area wrestler Tegan Durishin (Lehighton)."Caleb really stood out for us during the tournament," said Tigers head coach Jim Moll. "He just wrestles really hard every time he's on the mat for us as a freshman. He's constantly attacking and really fun to watch."Lehighton's Connor Frey (182) and Palmerton's Zach Graver (170) each took fifth. The Bombers also saw Zack Christman (160, sixth) and Jarred Mooney (182, eighth) place.Pleasant Valley's Brody Keefe (170) was the lone Bear to medal, as he finished in seventh place. For the likes of Hlushack and Moll, seeing improvement against caliber opponents is all they were hoping for heading into another long weekend of tournament wrestling."This tournament shows us where we're at," said Moll. "We feel good with where we're at and this tournament helps us open our eyes on what we need to do better as a team in the [wrestling] room and on the mat during matches."Hluschak echoed similar sentiments, as the Bulldogs finish met team expectations, yet left the coach still wanting more."There's always room for improvement," he said. "I think coming into the tournament we would have been happy placing three or four guys, so we did what we set out to do. Now we just have to keep it going."Team scores1. Wyoming Seminary 272.5 ; 2.
