Telethon to pay tribute to volunteer

The 37th Annual American Cancer Society Telethon will air on this weekend throughout the region and will pay tribute to a volunteer who died in March.

This year, unlike years past, the familiar face of Kayla Knepper will not be seen backstage.Knepper was a telethon volunteer who died on March 2.On Sunday, a report will be made during the live broadcast of the telethon about the contributions received in honor and memory of Kayla and her commitment to help others. To donate, visit cancertelethon.org or make a check payable to Cancer Telethon, Box 33, Lansford, PA 18232.Forty-five acts will take to the stage for the two-day event held at Penn's Peak.The 24-hour telethon benefits the American Cancer Society.The program will air live on Saturday and Sunday from noon to midnight each day with an overnight re-telecast between Saturday and Sunday. Some of the acts include singers, dancers, rock and polka bands and a karate demonstration. Audience participation is encouraged. Admission is free.A Salute to Survivors segment is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.During this segment, survivors are introduced and encouraged to talk briefly about their battle with cancer. Individuals wishing to be part of the Salute to Survivors should check in at the front door of the Penn's Peak auditorium by 6:30 p.m.The 2016 telethon raised nearly $216,000.For more information, log onto cancertelethon.org.
