A letter read during last night’s meeting of the Lehighton Borough Council from Rose M. Lepore, regional commissioner for the Social Security Administration, indicated the Lehighton office of the SSA will be closed indefinitely when the contract it has to occupy the building expires in February 1984.

Lepore cited a decrease in the workload of staff members over the past 18 months, during which time the office received an average of 28 claims per week, with 20 percent of them having been handled by telephone.

The SSA official said that number of claims could effectively be handled by the Hazleton office, the end result being the administration will save an estimated $50,000 a year by closing the local office.
