Borough looks at landlord fees

Nesquehoning Council is looking at late fees for landlords who don't apply and pay for residential licensing.

RoniSue Ahner, borough secretary/treasurer, asked council what she should do since the application deadline for the licensing has passed. The deadline to submit the annual application was April 1.To date, about two-thirds of the landlords have not submitted the application or paid the $10 per apartment fee.Ahner sent out approximately 160 postcards notifying landlords of the application at the beginning of the year.A number of council members said they feel there should be a penalty fee for landlords who miss the deadline because now there are added costs to the borough for additional mailings that will be sent.Borough solicitor Robert Yurchak will look into the matter to see what can be done. The Residential Rental License application is a form available on the borough website that landlords must fill out for each dwelling unit.Ahner said this is an annual license that covers tenants and licensing. It is signed by the landlord and tenant and gives the borough the authority to evict the tenant after three incidents at the dwelling and pull a landlord's license if need be.It also helps the borough keep track of people moving into and out of the town.In other matters, council discussed the following items:• Organize an electronics recycling event in the borough. Discussions with a company are planned.• Discuss the status of the recycling contract with Solomon Container, the current company supplying recycling services in the borough. The company is asking for a contract fee increase from $100 a month to $320 a month due to additional fuel costs and other expenses.• Sign a resolution honoring Boy Scout Adam Nevenglosky, who will receive his Eagle Scout award on May 10.• Request help from four Rush Township fire police for the upcoming Kovatch Motorsports Nesquehoning Grand Prix, slated for Sunday.Fire police and borough police will be in charge of traffic control during the event.• Extend the burn ban for the borough. No open burning is allowed for the month.
