TikTok challenge hits Palmerton

Palmerton Area School District may have fallen victim to a monthly TikTok challenge, according to officials.

Facilities Director Joe Faenza reported during Tuesday night’s board workshop on an incident at Friday night’s home varsity football game against Schuylkill Haven.

“All of the fixtures in the bathroom were wrapped in toilet paper and numerous toilet wipes were flushed down the toilet,” Faenza said.

The wipes left an extensive amount of damage to the septic line running from the stadium bathroom.

“That’s about a 6-inch line that comes across the baseball field and it was blocked solid,” Faenza said.

While district officials said there is no way to know for sure who the perpetrator or perpetrators were, it could be related to a monthly challenge circulating around social media.

“September’s TikTok challenge was vandalize school bathrooms,” Faenza said. “I don’t know if it was related to that or not.”

Districts are taking notice to the monthly challenges. October’s TikTok challenge is “smack a staff member.”

Melissa Volcskai, Lehighton Area School District’s director of instructional technology integration and curricular innovation, posted a message on Twitter earlier this month, asking students and parents to be vigilant.

“A monthly TikTok challenge is being circulated around social media,” Volcskai wrote. “We encourage you to talk to your child/teen about the dangers and consequences associated with participating in one of these challenges.”
