Local Roundup: Results from Sept. 20

Lehighton gained wins in two sports, including its golf team which finished Schuylkill League play undefeated.

The Indians also received a victory in field hockey.

Other schools posting a pair of wins on Monday including Jim Thorpe (girls soccer, volleyball) and Tamaqua (golf, volleyball).

FIELD HOCKEY

Saucon Valley-Lehighton

Maddie Brown scored the game’s only goal in the first period as Lehighton posted a 1-0 victory over Saucon Valley.

Brown’s unassisted tally came with 1:59 left in the period.

Lehighton goalie Shelby Heater registered 11 saves to gain the shutout win.

The Indians improved to 5-3, while the Panthers dropped to 1-5.

PM East-Pleasant Valley

Two goals from Olivia Handelong helped Pocono Mountain East gain a 4-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

The Cardinals (6-2; 5-2) also received tallies from Tierney McCarrol and Mikenna Price.

The Bears are now 1-5 overall, and 1-4 in the EPC.

GIRLS SOCCER

Northwestern-Notre Dame

After a close first half, Northwestern pulled away in the second to earn a 5-0 Colonial League victory over Notre Dame of Green Pond.

Camryn Fitch scored to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead at the break. Goals from four different players in the second half allowed Northwestern to cruise to the win. Those goals came from Olivia Motolese, Sophia Motolese, Samantha Bardonner and Mia DeLillo.

Tiger goalie Naomi Glassberg finished with five saves.

Northwestern is now 7-1-1.

Marian-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe scored 10 first-half goals in a 10-0 victory over Marian in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Lauren LeKites finished with two goals and two assists, while Nicole Carroll and Kelli Hogarty both added a goal and an assist.

Olivia Rosenberger chipped in with two assists. Other goal scorers included Mackenzie Yuhas, Alexis Marotto, Kaila O’Connor, Kate Bos, Ella Cook and Ehlauna Penn.

Thorpe, now 4-2-1, finished with a 16-1 advantage in shots.

The loss dropped the Fillies to 1-4.

Northern Lehigh-Wilson

Katelynn Barthold had four goals as Northern Lehigh rolled to a 12-1 Colonial League victory over Wilson.

Mikayla Gordon finished with three goals for the Bulldogs, while Katya Pesesko (two goals) and Nicole Zarayko (three assists) also played key roles in the win.

Kalei Fister, Caitlin Kirk and Emma Niebell all chipped in one goal for Northern Lehigh (7-1; 5-0).

Pleasant Valley-ES South

Pleasant Valley received goals from three different players to earn a 3-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over East Stroudsburg South.

Autumn Castro, Madison Fava and Ella Muir all tallied for the Bears, while all three also contributed an assist.

PV, now 3-2 overall, finished with a commanding 34-2 advantage in shots.

Winning goalie Sam Merklin turned aside two shots.

Palmerton-So. Lehigh

Faith VandeBunte’s goal gave Southern Lehigh a 1-0 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Daniella Oviedo assisted on the only tally, which upped the Spartans record to 7-1.

The Blue Bombers, who dropped to 7-2, managed just two shots on goal.

Tamaqua-Blue Mountain

Megan Thompson and Reese Baldwin both scored two goals to lead Blue Mountain to a 7-0 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

The Eagles, who led 3-0 at halftime, also received goals from Danika Bolinsky, Lexi Phillips and Kylie Conway.

Tamaqua goalie Zoe Seltzer stopped 14 shots.

The Blue Raiders fell to 1-8 overall, and 1-4 in the league. Blue Mountain is now 3-4.

Lehighton-Pottsville

Ava Goodman and Maddie Wright both scored two goals to lead Pottsville to an 11-1 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

Ryleigh Cook also finished with a goal and four assists for the Tide, who outshot the Indians by a 20-6 margin.

Kayla Hregician accounted for the only Lehighton tally, with Abigail Meckes adding the assist.

The Indians dropped to 3-5.

BOYS SOCCER

Northwestern-Saucon Vy.

Oscar Valencia scored the only goals of the game as Saucon Valley registered a 2-0 Colonial League victory over Northwestern.

Trevor Mikuta assisted on one of the goals.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 4-2 overall.

So. Lehigh-Palmerton

Southern Lehigh cruised to a 6-0 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Bombers’ goalie Aidan Wentz finished with 12 saves.

Palmerton fell to 1-6 overall, and 0-5 in the league, while Southern Lehigh moved to 5-3-1 overall, and 4-1-0 in the CL.

Sch. Haven-Weatherly

Weatherly dropped a 7-0 Schuylkill League decision to Schuylkill Haven.

Mike McGoey scored four goals to lead the Hurricanes, while Astin Daniel tallied twice.

The Wreckers’ Frankie Willis made 22 saves.

The loss dropped Weatherly to 0-5-1.

GOLF

Pottsville-Lehighton

Lehighton finished Schuylkill League play undefeated after gaining a 329-393 victory over Pottsville.

Jack Lorenz paced the Indians with a 74, while Aaron Miller finished with a 79 and Trey Spring contributed an 81.

Lehighton, now 13-1 overall, finished league play with a mark of 12-0.

Trent Schlecht earned medalist honors to help Tamaqua post a 358-425 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Schlect finished with an 82, while teammate Peter McGinley was two strokes back with an 84.

Ed Weaver fired an 85 for the Olympians, who also dropped a 393-425 decision to Pottsville.

The Blue Raiders are now 4-9, while Thorpe is 0-11.

VOLLEYBALL

Lehighton-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe fought off a Lehighton comeback attempt to gain a 25-9, 25-18, 18-25, 17-25, 15-11 Schuylkill League victory.

Kristin Pompa had 13 kills, three aces and two blocks for the Olympians, while Andi Hoherchak finished with 31 assists and two aces.

The winners also received 17 digs from Haylei James, with Alexandra Ramey contributing eight kills. Thorpe’s Leah Figura chipped in with seven digs.

For the Indians - who battled back from a 2-0 deficit to force a deciding fifth game - Megan Aaron had eight kills and 13 digs. Lehighton’s Hailey Miller added 25 digs and four kills, while Haley Ginder finished with six kills, seven blocks and five aces. Madelyn Sofranko also had 11 assists.

The Olympians are now 5-1, while Lehighton is 3-3.

Catasauqua-Tamaqua

Tamaqua rallied from a 2-0 hole to gain a 13-25, 16-25, 28-26, 25-19, 15-8 nonconference victory over Catasauqua.

Jillian Tite had three kills and five aces for the Blue Raiders, while Lacey Beers contributed seven digs and a pair of aces.

Eileen Lusch finished with two kills, three aces and three digs, with Erika Gerhard (five aces, two digs, one kill) and Madison Baddick (three digs, one kill) also aiding the Tamaqua cause.

The win lifts the Raiders record to 2-5.

Beth. Catholic-Pleasant Vy.

Bethlehem Catholic swept past Pleasant Valley 25-10, 25-19, 25-12 in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference match.

Jackie James had three kills and six digs for the Bears (1-5), while Emily Shupp recorded six assists and three digs.

Mahanoy Area-Weatherly

Gianna Lowman registered six kills and four digs, but Weatherly dropped a 25-7, 25-9, 25-14 Schuylkill League match to Mahanoy Area.

The Wreckers’ Huntyr Eichhorst had three digs and three assists, while Marissa Hoffman finished with five digs.

The loss dropped Weatherly to 1-6.

GIRLS TENNIS

Pottsville-Tamaqua

Pottsville didn’t drop a single set in gaining a 5-0 victory over Tamaqua.

The Tide received singles victories from Elise Gilot, Kaylee Becker and Daniella Walker.

The loss puts the Blue Raiders at 2-7.
