Lehighton plans to take the necessary steps to complete its new Light and Power Building.
By a unanimous measure, borough council this week voted to advertise for bids to complete the building by February. The work calls for the completion of the fifth bay in the new building to include restrooms, a break room, mechanical room and storage. The permit would expire in February in the event work does not proceed.David Bodnar, planning director for the Carbon County Office of Planning and Development, met with council this week as part of the borough's second Community Development Block Grant hearing. The current anticipated amount for the borough for fiscal year 2016 is $78,104 in project costs and $17,144 in administrative costs, with a total grant of $95,248.The project selected is ADA handicapped improvements to the corners of North Second Street, Cypress Street, 11th/Hamilton, 12th/Hamilton and 11th/Mahoning.The borough intends to use future CDBG funds to reconstruct/repave streets within the borough. The CDBG application is due on or before Dec. 16.Council President Grant Hunsicker raised a concern about the ADA ramp replacement on Mahoning since it's a state road.Borough Manager Nicole Beckett told Hunsicker she and borough engineer Bruce Steigerwalt picked those locations because the borough will be completing a sewer rehabilitation project on 11th, 12th and Hamilton streets. This way, the ramps would be taken care of, Beckett said. Otherwise, she said it would need to be completed as part of the project with resurfacing."I think that's a waste of money there," Hunsicker said.
