Final day today

The Ladies Auxiliary of Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company is having a hoagie sale. The hoagies are coming from Thompson’s Meat Market and the orders are due today.

Pickup is Sept. 1

School board meets

The Board of Education for Pleasant Valley is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The students begin their school year next Monday.

Haiti help

Local Lutheran churches are asking for help for Haiti via Lutheran Disaster Response as per Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville.

People can donate via local churches. Checks or money orders can be sent to: Lutheran Disaster Response, P.O. Box 1809, Merrifield, VA 22116-8009 and one should write Haiti Crisis on the check memo line.

Donations can also be made via phone at 800-638-3522 or online.

Blood drive held

On Thursday, at Chestnuthill Park, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., a community blood drive will be held through the American Red Cross. Schedule appointments by contacting 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visiting RedCrossBlood.org and enter Chestnuthill.

Shut-in help

Effort UMC has shared that the church has been informed that Wind Gap Pharmacy will do home shots for those who cannot get out. For more information, contact the pharmacy at 610-881-4260.

Pantry open

The SFRC pantry at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Call the church at 570-629-1890 if more information is needed.

Hoagie pickup

Those who ordered hoagies from Zion Lutheran Church are reminded pickup time is 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

QV craft festival

The Pocono State Craft Festival will take place at Quiet Valley from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The event is a partnership between Quiet Valley, the Pocono Arts Council and the Pocono chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.

Meeting changed

Due to the West End Fair this week, the Polk Township Board of Supervisors did not meet this past Monday but will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 30.

Bingo time

Monday night bingo for anyone continues at the American Legion in Gilbert. Card sales begin at 6:30 p.m.; calling at 7 p.m.

Spaghetti dinner

The Polk volunteers will be having an all-you-can-eat dine-in-spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. next Wednesday. Takeouts will be available.

Seniors menu

The menu for the Chestnuthill Seniors meeting at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville calls for chicken and dumplings on Sept. 1 and Thermidor on Sept. 3.

Seniors wanting to have the hot lunch must call Dolores Casalaspro 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m., two days in advance, to order.

OES meeting

Monroe Chapter No. 99. O.E.S. will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 1 at the Masonic Center in Bartonsville.

Social hour and refreshments following the meeting.

In-person events

The Western Pocono Community Library will be welcoming in-person programming in September.

Day of Caring

The Pocono Mountains United Way reminds all that Sept. 8 is the 2021 Day of Caring for Monroe County. Many good works have been done by volunteers in the West End over the years.

Patriot Day

A remembrance ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 11 at the American Legion Post 927, 646 Fairgrounds Road, Gilbert.

The event is open to the community. A light luncheon will be provided.

Ride & Rally

The Valor Organization, American Legion Post 927, Gilbert; American Legion Riders Chapter 927, Gilbert; and Sons of Mosby Motorcycle Association are sponsoring a Keep them Alive ride and rally with Live Wire on Saturday, Sept. 18, with Mark Baylis, Valor organization, as speaker; Gold Star families and Earl Granville, as special guests.

It is a free and open event.

The staging area is the American Legion PA Headquarters, 800 N. Front St., Wormleysburg. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Kickstands up at 11:20 a.m. for riding to the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building.

The rally is at noon on the steps of the PA State Capitol Building, 501 N. Third St., Harrisburg, PA.

Live Wire band, food, vendors, will follow the rally and will be in the in Soldiers Grove.

The focus is to let politicians know that the suicide rate for those veterans who fought for our country is unacceptable and to show support for the veterans and keep them alive.

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity has announced its golf tournament fundraiser for Sept. 24, at Great Bear Gold Club.

Photo contest

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center has announced its annual photo contest.

Photos that showcase Monroe County’s finest natural resources need to be submitted by Sept. 24.

Winners will receive fresh maple syrup from the Meesing Sugarbush and a 2022 MCCD calendar. One grand prize winner will also be featured on the cover of our 2022 calendar.

StoryWalk

The West End Park And Open Space Commission has announced a new StoryWalk in partnering with the Western Pocono Community Library now through autumn.

Laminated pages will be rotated throughout the locations of Ross Township Park, 248 Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg), and West End Regional Park, 578 Evergreen Hollow Road, Brodheadsville.

Families are invited to walk the trails and read the stories along the way, as well as enjoy the other park amenities at each one which include: playgrounds, pavilions, dog park, basketball court, volleyball court, bocce ball court, and more.
