Coaldale settles with employee

Coaldale Borough Council has agreed to a financial settlement with a longtime employee and council member.

Council members voted last week to approve a $120,000 worker’s compensation settlement and a $5,000 human relations settlement with Ken Hankey Jr.

As part of the proposed agreement they also accepted his resignation from his job on the borough road crew.

Hankey has served on council since 2019. He was absent from the meeting and didn’t vote on the settlement. He said Monday that he didn’t want to possibly violate the terms of the settlement by discussing it.

All of the councilmembers who were present voted in favor of the agreement except Claire Remington.

Remington said Monday that the injury had kept him out of work for more than a year and was one of several reported by Hankey.

“It was better to cut our losses and be able to move on, and do positive things with our town,” she said.

Jim Logue Jr. contributed to this report.
