Engineer: Speeding an issue near construction project

Speeding at a construction site along Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard in Lehighton has become an issue.

Borough engineer Bruce Steigerwalt told borough council last week the construction project is almost complete.

However, Steigerwalt - who has been on site doing construction monitoring - noted that speeding has been a concern.

“I think the only thing that’s going to slow down is a (very) large police presence,” Steigerwalt said. “People just did not slow down.”

Borough Manager Nicole Beckett agreed the situation needs to be resolved.

“It’s horrendous down there,” Beckett said. “Something needs to be done about the speeding.”

Especially the moment when motorists see an opening, Steigerwalt said.

“They just sail the minute they get by the actual work zone,” he said. “They punch it.”

Further, Steigerwalt said he was concerned with how much of an impact the traffic calming project will have without having a police presence.

After the meeting, Beckett said the pedestrian improvements and traffic calming is in the design stages.
