Driver facing DUI after Carbon crash

A Luzerne County driver is facing a driving under the influence of a controlled substance charge following a three-vehicle crash that occurred at 6:52 p.m. on May 7 along Route 93 at the intersection with Spring Mountain Road, in Banks Township, Carbon County. State police at Hazleton said Angela M. Brill, 25, of Weatherly, was driving a 2020 Jeep Wrangler northbound when she noticed an erratic driver traveling southbound. She pulled onto the berm of the road to call 911. The other driver, driving a 2003 Volvo S60, failed to negotiate a left curve and went onto the east berm and struck Brill’s vehicle. After impact the Volvo continued on and overturned, then struck a utility pole.

Troopers said debris from the crash caused damages to a 2015 Nissan Rogue, operated by Matthew L. Wohleber, 56, of Hazleton, who had pulled in behind Brill.

The driver of the Volvo was identified as a 21-year-old man from Sugarloaf, who troopers declined to identify.

Brill, her passenger, Courtney M. Lovett, 25, of Weatherly, and Wohleber, were all not injured. A passenger in the Volvo, Ryan J. Lakata, 29, of Weatherly, sustained a minor injury and was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital - Hazleton Campus. Another passenger in the Volvo, Luke S. Cann, 21, of Hazleton, was not injured.

The Volvo and Jeep had to be towed.

The Volvo driver was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and taken for a blood draw, troopers said.
