A celebration of diversity at Pleasant Valley

Sixteen years ago when the Pleasant Valley School District first wanted to celebrate the diversity of its students and staff they turned to Walter E. Washington.

Washington was president of the Stroudsburg Little Bethel Historical Society and very active in the community.Washington passed away last November and was honored by the district at Tuesday evening's annual Night of Diversity where he was remembered as being a good friend to the district. The event was very well-attended with 50 different clubs, civic organizations and ethnic groups displaying various items. The attendees were able to get information on community services and learn about different ethnic and cultural customs and most importantly, food.Tables were filled with treats of all kinds representing Mexico, Portugal, Italy, Turkey, China and many more. There was also entertainment throughout the evening including Irish folk dancing, a bagpiper, contemporary and ballet dancing. The event culminated with Don Wild Eagle, a security guard at the district who is also the nationwide peacekeeper of the Wolf Clan Council of the Great Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indians.Wild Eagle lead a Round Dance, which traditionally is used to symbolize unity among the people.
