St. John Neumann students learn about the arctic and Eskimos

Here's one igloo that won't be melting anytime soon.

Made from 500 gallon jugs held together by hot glue, an igloo is up and in use at St. John Neumann Regional School's Slatington campus.Instructors Mary Hartz and Jess Yorke taught kindergarten and first-grade pupils an arctic theme. Hartz said it took 12 hours to put the igloo together, and about 40 big glue sticks were used."The students learned about arctic animals, the Eskimos, how the Eskimos live and transportation," Hartz said."The theme was supplemented with arctic sites and games online, experiments like the "Blubber Glove" to teach how blubber insulates against the cold, art activities such as making walruses, and the students designed posters showing an Eskimo village and wrote a paragraph about the poster."Hartz said the igloo was the culmination of the theme."The students love the igloo," she said. "They use it for journal writing, silent reading, paired reading, quiet time, work on laptops and many more activities."
