The Tamaqua High School baseball team will head south for some spring training, returning to Hilton Head, South Carolina, as they did for the first time last year. The school board approved the trip during a meeting Tuesday; the dates are March 5-9.

The 2015-16 Tamaqua Area School District calendar dates haven't gotten final approval yet. Historically the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 establishes a calendar, and all member districts, which include Tamaqua and other Schuylkill County districts, adopt a uniform calendar.At a previous meeting, the school board had accepted the IU 29 2015-16 calendar, but during Wednesday night's meeting, they rescinded that vote."The IU did not approve and adopt the calendar recommended by many of the member districts," Superintendent Carol Makuta said. "The board rescinded their previous action on that and did not approve the latest calendar recommended by the IU."The board approved the hiring of Sabrina Hallick, Orwigsburg, as a guidance counselor for the high school.The board also approved the appointment of Bowe, Lisella and Bowe, Tamaqua, as the school solicitor law firm at a retainer of $5,200 and billings at $150 per hour.
