Man gets prison in eye-gouging

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A judge called a Philadelphia man a threat to society as she sentenced him to serve 41½ to 83 years in prison for gouging another man's eyes out.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Stephen Masten was sentenced Monday in Philadelphia for a 2012 assault that left David Phillips blind, as well as for a prison guard assault.Authorities say the two, who were members of a Philadelphia-based white supremacist group, had a dispute involving Masten's girlfriend while Masten was jailed.Judge Timika Lane called the 33-year-old Masten volatile and aggressive, noting he has a history of mental illness and was raised to "assault various people of color."Masten says the incident stemmed from his life as a member of the violent white supremacist group.
