Kids learn about healthy lifestyles

In an effort to prompt a healthy lifestyle, Blue Mountain Health System held its 27th annual Children's Fair on Fridayat the Lehighton Recreation Center.

Seventeen area agencies constructed superhero-themed booths with activities and information for kindergarten to second-grade students to educate about the importance of good habits. More than 450 children attended from Carbon County's elementary schools.Carbon County Drug and Alcohol Agency's Jacqui Kromer dressed as the Black Widow to teach kids about the dangers of smoking, setting up a pair of pig lungs, one healthy and one damaged, to fully demonstrate the health risks of tobacco.An Aqua Man booth was set up as a Kid Zone where students ran an obstacle course over a tight rope and through a cardboard fort.Aetna Better Health's representative dressed as Mrs. Incredible to teach the kids about the food pyramid and making smart meal time choices.BMHS Imaging Services set up an X-ray booth where kids learned what a fracture looks on the transparent film used in doctor's offices."We just want kids to learn health habits early and carry it on to adult life. We start out early to push healthy habits now," said community education coordinator Mary Lou McGeehan. "And it's fun for the kids."
