Lehighton to buy new substation transformer

Lehighton plans to buy a new substation transformer.

On a unanimous measure, borough council on Monday authorized Utility Engineers to proceed with the bidding process for the purchase of the new substation transformer.

Lonny Armbruster, superintendent of the borough’s Light and Power Department, said the plan was to bid out for just one transformer.

Borough Manager Nicole Beckett said after the meeting it is for the new substation transformer.

“There are two transformers at the substation, and our intent is to replace both over a two- to three-year period,” Beckett said. “The estimated cost per transformer is $600,000, totaling an estimated cost of $1.2 million for both replacements.”

Beckett said they will know more once bids are received.
