Beers says no to board treasurer

A Lehighton Area School District board member has turned down her nomination for the board treasurer position.

Joy Beers, elected to serve as treasurer for one year by a 6-0 vote last week with two directors abstaining, said in an email to Board President Larry Stern that she did not want the post.

“If I assume the role, I will not sign everything that is brought before me even if the board votes for it,” Beers said in the email. “I don’t think that you want that in a treasurer.”

By the time the item came up on the agenda, which was over four hours in to Lehighton’s May 24 meeting, Beers had left the Zoom, but she garnered six votes for approval with Wayne Wentz and Stephen Holland abstaining.

Beers was elected board treasurer in 2019-20, but resigned midway through the year saying she “was not comfortable with her signature being applied to district documents.”

Earlier in last week’s meeting, a vote to appoint Rita Spinelli to the treasurer position failed when directors deadlocked 4-4, with Spinelli herself voting no.

District officials said another vote will be taken at Lehighton’s June board meeting.

The treasurer term runs from July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022.
