Nesquehoning residents complain about manure smell

Nesquehoning residents are asking, where is the smell coming from?

During borough council’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, Michael Malaska asked if anyone was aware of any sewage being dumped around the area because of a strong manure smell throughout the borough earlier this week.

“The other day, the stench in New Columbus, down at Redner’s, it was everywhere,” he said.

Councilman Michael Radocha said that the smell was not only in Nesquehoning, but also in Summit Hill and Lehighton.

Council President David Hawk said he spoke with Lehigh Anthracite, the mining company in the area, and he was told that it was not them.

Radocha asked if the solar park was seeded, which could have explained the smell.

Hawk said that council will continue to try to find the source if the smell continues.

“It was bad,” Radocha said.

Councilman George Sabol said that he also called the railroad to see if they had sprayed along the tracks and they had not.

He also said he wondered if the smell was coming from the biomedical waste companies just outside of town.

“We are checking into it,” Sabol said.

Hawk noted that he had also spoken with Mark Nalesnik, the Carbon County Emergency Management Agency coordinator, and they could not find the source either.

John McArdle, borough emergency management coordinator, said the odor was everywhere and it couldn’t be pinpointed at this time, but said he suspects it was someone spreading manure somewhere to grow vegetation.
