A pair of water main breaks in Jim Thorpe Borough caused L.B. Morris School to be dismissed early Monday, and created more for already overworked borough maintenance crew.
The broken pipes also caused low water pressure for other borough residents, officials said.
The issue was reported around 12 p.m. on East Tenth Street in the borough.
L.B. Morris, located on West Tenth Street, was dismissed around 1 p.m. because of low water pressure in the school building. Unfortunately, Jim Thorpe was already running on a two-hour delay after winter storm Jonas, making the school day Monday about three hours long.
Superintendent Brian Gasper said school officials tried to work through the day after a leak was reported this morning. They dismissed after borough officials notified them of a second, separate issue.
All other Jim Thorpe schools were dismissed at the regular time. Gasper said L.B. Morris will not have to make up an extra days of school
Borough residents were notified that they may receive low or no water pressure as a result of the water main break, according to borough manager Maureen Sterner, but there was no immediate need for residents to boil water.
It was the second reported water main break during the day Monday in Jim Thorpe. Water main breaks are not uncommon this time of year due to the freeze-thaw of winter putting stress on, and sometimes breaking, the pipes.
"It just happens, with the snow and everything," Sterner said.
Crews were working on the scene as of 2:30 p.m. Sterner said that crews patched another water main that broke in the borough earlier in the day as well.
