Lehighton wants to add another full-time police officer to beef up its ranks.

On a 6-0 vote last week, with Councilman Darryl Arner absent, borough council agreed to have the Civil Service Commission present an updated eligibility list.Council's decision came after borough Mayor Tom Mase broached the matter in light of the recent retirement of Sgt. Joe Lawrence from the police department.Due to Lawrence retiring, the police force is down one full-timer, Mase said.Bringing on another full-timer would cost the borough $110,000 in wages and benefits, according to discussion at recent meetings.Terry Ahner
