Two people charged with driving under the influence and related offenses were scheduled for bench trials this week in Carbon County court.

As a result, one was found guilty by the presiding judge while the second, in cases that have lingered in the system since 2013, had one set of charges withdrawn, and in the second case he withdrew his request for bench trial and entered a guilty plea.Found guiltyDarrin Jon Riley, 52, of Slatington, was found guilty of driving under the influence and summary offenses of careless driving and improper sun screen by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II following the bench trial. Nanovic found him not guilty of a second DUI count and a summary offense of reckless driving.Riley was arrested on Sept. 4, 2015, along Route 248 at Bowmanstown by state police at Lehighton. A test revealed a 0.09 BAC.Nanovic deferred sentencing because Riley must obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.Enters pleaRonald A. Cohen, 66, of Parryville, pleaded guilty to one count of DUI in one case while a second case involving DUI was withdrawn by the district attorney's office. Both cases have a long history in the system with 26 continuances filed in the case in which he entered a plea and 16 continuances granted in the case which was withdrawn.Cohen was arrested on June 17, 2013, by state police at Lehighton along White Street in Bowmanstown. He was charged with DUI of a controlled substance.The case that was withdrawn occurred on Sept. 22, 2013, also involving state police at Lehighton.Nanovic deferred sentencing so Cohen can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation and also apply for placement in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program - house arrest.
