Local Roundup: Results from May 6

It was a good day for Palmerton Thursday, as its baseball team picked up a pair of wins, while its softball squad rallied from a six-run deficit to gain an eight-inning comeback victory.

Also posting wins were the Jim Thorpe and Marian baseball teams, as well as the Tamaqua softball squad.

The Blue Raiders track teams also swept a quad meet.

BASEBALL

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Jim Thorpe won its fourth game in a row, gaining an 8-6 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

The two teams combined for 31 hits, as both the Olympians and Blue Raiders had six different players with at least two hits.

Garrett Lienhard and Caiden Hurley had three hits apiece for Thorpe, who snapped a 5-5 tie with two runs in the fifth inning. Two of Lienhard’s hits were doubles.

The winners, now 11-7 overall and 6-4 in the league, received two hits and a run scored from Jared Joyce, Ian Hubbard, Jared Marykwas and Ian Henkels. Both hits for Marykwas went for extra bases (double, triple).

Thomas Case paced Tamaqua (4-10; 2-8) with three hits and two runs scored, while Nate Wickersham had two hits - one a three-run homer. The Raiders also received two hits from Mason Moyer, Kaleb Muschock, Aaron Coccio and Joel Shellhamer.

Lehighton-Pine Grove

Pine Grove took advantage of 11 walks to gain a 13-3 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

Caden Conrad, Jacob Strubhar and Hunter Legarht each had a hit and two RBIs for the Cardinals, while winning pitcher Josh Leininger had a hit and scored three times.

The Indians, who scored all their runs in the first inning, received a hit and two RBIs from Jayden Gable. Lehighton (2-13; 0-10) also received a hit and run scored from both Grant Schaeffer and Randy Bongiorno.

Marian-Nativity

A four-run seventh inning helped Marian pull out a 6-2 Schuylkill League victory over Nativity.

Luke Walser had a big day at the plate for the Colts, while Brian Hinkle had a solid day on the mound.

Walser finished 3-for-3, including a double, run scored and three RBIs. Hinkle scattered six hits and one walk, allowed two unearned runs, and struck out six.

Marian (4-9; 3-8) also received two hits from both Chase Petrilyak and Riley Katchur.

Pleasant Valley-Liberty

Jack Rothenhausler had two hits and two RBIs to help Liberty gain a 5-3 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Liberty.

The Hurricanes broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning on an RBI-double by Blake George and a run-scoring single off the bat of Sam Raineri.

Brandon Ratti had a hit, two runs scored and two walks for the Bears (12-3). PV also received a double and two RBIs from Jack Smale, while Zach Walters chipped in with a double, RBI and run scored.

Palisades-Palmerton

Kaleb Eitner delivered a two-run double in the sixth inning to break a tie and lift Palmerton to a 4-2 Colonial League win over Palisades.

Brock Bollinger walked, and Tyler Stuck was hit by a pitch, before the two worked a double steal. Eitner then stroked a two-out double to left to give the Blue Bombers the lead.

Winning pitcher Connor Beahm struck out two during a scoreless seventh to preserve the victory.

Ethan Recker had a hit and an RBI for the winners, while Bollinger slugged a solo homer and also walked twice.

The win lifted Palmerton to 10-8 overall, and 9-7 in the league.

Palmerton exploded for eight runs in the third inning to cruise to a 12-1 Colonial League victory over Moravian Academy.

Brock Bollinger had two hits and knocked in four runs for the Blue Bombers, who also received a pair of doubles and two runs scored from Tyler Stuck.

Ethan Recker contributed two hits and three runs, while Cole Serfass added a pair of hits and two RBIs. Also chipping in was Jacob Sutton, who finished with two hits and a pair of runs.

Starting pitcher Justin Behler pitched three hitless innings to earn the win.

Matthew Tankred pitched a three-hit shutout as Southern Lehigh posted a 10-0 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Tankred walked three and struck out nine in his six innings of work.

Ashton Levy had two hits and scored three runs for the Spartans, who scored five times in the first inning.

The Bulldogs (1-15; 1-13) received a pair of hits from Brett Misera.

SOFTBALL

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Tamaqua scored five runs in the fourth inning to help earn a 6-3 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

The Blue Raiders (8-8; 6-5) used consecutive two-out hits from Ella McLaughlin, Riley Zeigenfuss and Alexus Warne in that fourth frame to take control of the game.

Zeigenfuss finished with three hits and two RBIs, while Warne and Kailey Richards both added a pair of hits. Winning pitcher Bryn Clifford struck out 10.

The Olympians (5-13; 3-9) were paced by Carsen Rosenberger, who finished with three hits - one a double - and an RBI. Nadya Soliman also contributed two hits snd scored two runs.

Lehighton-Pine Grove

Pine Grove’s Megan Wolfe and Alera Aungst combined on a no-hitter to lead the Cardinals to a 10-0 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

Wolfe earned the win, striking out 11 in 4 1/3 innings. Aungst retired the last two batters, one by strikeout.

The Indians’ Addison Chayanic prevented a perfect game by drawing two walks.

Emily Fisher paced Pine Grove with three hits and two runs scored. Wolfe helped her own cause with a pair of hits and two RBIs.

The loss dropped Lehighton to 2-14 overall, and 1-11 in the league.

Shenandoah-Panther Valley

Panther Valley grabbed an early lead, but Shenandoah Valley came back to post a 9-5 Schuylkill League victory.

Mikayla Yuricheck had four hits for the Panthers, who held a 4-1 advantage after three innings.

PV (1-15; 0-10) also received two hits, one a double, from Liz Rex.

Winning pitcher Abigail Davis ended with 11 strikeouts.

Pleasant Valley-Liberty

Pleasant Valley’s Eve Kratzer blasted two home runs, but it wasn’t enough as Liberty pulled away for a 15-6 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win.

Kratzer drilled a two-run homer during a five-run first inning, but that lead don’t hold up as the Hurricanes scored four runs in the second and added five more in the fourth.

Samantha Ratti had two hits and a run scored for the Bears (4-8).

Liberty’s Arianna Castillo paced the winners with a double, triple and three RBIs.

Southern Lehigh-Palmerton

Yesse Olewine’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Palmerton to an 8-7 Colonial League comeback victory over Southern Lehigh.

Olewine finished the contest with two hits and two RBIs.

The Blue Bombers, who trailed 6-0 entering the bottom of the third inning, banged out 16 hits in the contest, with Megan Serfass collecting four of them. Among her hits were two doubles, and she also knocked in a pair of runs.

Winning pitcher Carly Gaffney added two doubles and drove home three runs, while Megan Matsko contributed three hits. Palmerton (14-3; 12-2) also received two hits and three walks from Megan Green.

Nativity used a four-run third inning to help earn a 7-2 Schuylkill League victory over Marian.

Winning pitcher Samantha Heenan had three hits for the Green Wave, while Makenna Burke and Mikaya Beadle both knocked in two runs.

The Fillies (8-5; 6-5) received three hits from Athena Matenkoski, while Mia Nemeth and Eden Arnold both finished with a pair of hits.

After Northern Lehigh used a late rally to tie Southern Lehigh, the Spartans put together a six-run inning to pull out an 11-5 Colonial League victory.

Solehi’s Morgan Benner finished with five hits, including a go-ahead RBI-single in the sixth. Mikaela Benner added a two-run double during the big frame.

Bree Hess paced the Bulldogs (4-11; 3-10) with three hits, one a double, scoring once and knocking in a run. Jordan Hemingway added a pair of hits, including a triple, and three RBIs, while Cadence Peters chipped in with a double and an RBI.

Tamaqua hosted a quad meet, and both its team finished with sweeps.

The Marian boys and girls both finished 2-1, while the Panther Valley girls picked up a win.

The Blue Raiders’ Caitlin Smith (100, 200) and Megan Rolko (long jump, triple jump) each won a pair of individual events, while PV’s Hailey Schreffler (800, 1600) also had two firsts.

In the boys competition, Marian’s Ean Chelak took both the 200 and 400.
