Man faces 76 counts in sexual assaults

Charges against a Jim Thorpe man who was previously charged with the sexual assault of a juvenile have been bound over to Carbon County Court.

Kevin William Gowrie, 42, of Jim Thorpe had a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge Eric Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.Gowrie is scheduled to have a pretrial date Dec. 15 before the Carbon County Court of Common Pleas.Gowrie faces a long list of 19 offenses, including four counts each of rape of a child, statutory sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Fifteen of the listed offenses - 60 counts total - are felonies, with four offenses - 16 counts - listed as misdemeanors.Charges against Gowrie stem from two incidents in the Jim Thorpe area.Gowrie was first charged with sexual assault of a 12-year-old boy by Jim Thorpe Police on Sept. 26.In that case, Detective Lee Marzen of the Jim Thorpe Police Department received a ChildLine report of sexual assault on a child on Sept. 7, when it was reported that a 12-year-old boy had been assaulted by a 42-year-old man, identified as Gowrie.Marzen spoke with the child's mother, and she agreed to a forensic interview at the Children's Advocacy Center of Scranton.Cheryl A. Friedmanm, CRNP, performed a medical exam on the child, and said that the child disclosed that Gowrie had sexually assaulted him.The boy reported that he was at Gowrie's home on at least four occasions, and had been assaulted numerous times on each occasion. Gowrie threatened to hurt or kill the boy, according to the affidavit, telling him, "I know where you live, I know where you sleep."The boy said that the first sexual offense took place at Gowrie's home, with another incident following a few weeks later.At least two other incidents were reported as well.The boy said that Gowrie had been communicating with him via Facebook for about two and a half years, with Gowrie verbally abusing him.In the second case, state police at Lehighton charged Gowrie on Oct. 10 as the result of an investigation into the sexual assault of a 16-year-old juvenile.The alleged assaults occurred in Penn Forest Township on Sept. 2.Troopers said Gowrie provided vodka to the teen and then performed sexual acts on the victim.Gowrie has been recommitted to Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 straight bail on the 70-plus charges, and $50,000 straight for corruption of minors, and furnishing liquor to minors.
