Jim Deebel is hoping that fishing at Phifer Ice Dam Park in Franklin Township will be easier in years to come.

Deebel, the president of the Pohopoco Rod and Gun Club, brought the idea of stocking grass carp in a pond at the park to help control weed growth to the township supervisors.The club holds a fishing derby for children each year at the park and noticed that the pond sometimes gets overgrown with weeds. Deebel knew that others with similar-sized ponds were able to take care of overgrowth by introducing grass carp.He described it as an organic, nonchemical way to address the problem.After getting approval from the supervisors the club obtained a permit from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.Based on the pond's depth and surface area the commission recommended introducing 10 grass carp in the 11-14 inch range.The club purchased the fish from B-C Bait in Franklin Township for $140, and released them into the pond on Thursday afternoon.The fish, which were certified sterile, so they will not reproduce. Deebel doesn't expect them to affect fishing."They eat grass, so they won't go after bait," Deeble said. "The only way they'll be caught is if someone snags them with a treble hook."If anybody does happen to catch one of the fish he hopes that it would be released back into the pond.
