Local Roundup: Results from April 10

Northwestern’s baseball team and Tamaqua’s softball squad used strong pitching performances to gain wins on Saturday.

The Tigers received a combined two-hit shutout to defeat Palmerton, while the Blue Raiders’ Bryn Clifford tossed a five-inning no-hitter to stop Mahanoy Area.

Lehighton and Jim Thorpe also posted softball wins, while Northwestern’s girls lacrosse team also earned a victory.

BASEBALL

Palmerton-Northwestern

Rafe Perich and Ben Boyer combined on a two-hit shutout as Northwestern gained a 3-0 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Perich, the starter and winner, threw 5 2/3 innings, striking out 10 and walking two while surrendering both hits. Boyer recorded the final four outs, two by strikeout, to earn the save.

Boyer also delivered two hits and scored a pair of runs for the Tigers (6-0; 5-0).

Dylan Witkowski added a double and run scored, while RJ Zack had chipped in with an RBI double.

The Bombers’ Garrett Horvath was the hard-luck loser, allowing just four hits in a complete game effort. Horvath struck out two and walked five. Brock Bollinger had both hits for Palmerton (3-3; 2-2).

Pleasant Valley-PM East

Jordan Carty’s RBI single in the bottom of the 13th inning lifted Pocono Mountain East to a thrilling 7-6 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

The Bears took a 6-4 lead in the top of the 12th on Zach Walters’ two-run homer, but the Cards tied it with two outs in the bottom half on Adam Horvath’s double.

Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for PM East in the 13th before Carty delivered his game-winner.

Jack Smale finished 4-for-6 with four doubles and an RBI for PV, while Brandon Ratti added three hits and three runs. Walters added another hit and had three RBIs.

The loss dropped the Bears to 3-1.

Jim Thorpe-Schuylkill Haven

Schuylkill Haven held off Jim Thorpe to gain a 9-5 non-league victory.

Shane Pothering knocked in three runs for the winners, who benefited from five Olympian errors.

Thorpe (3-3) received three hits, one a double, two runs and two RBIs from Jared Joyce, while Caiden Hurley added a single, double and two runs scored. Colby McHugh also knocked in a pair of runs.

SOFTBALL

Mahanoy Area-Tamaqua

Bryn Clifford pitched a five-inning no-hitter to lead Tamaqua to an 11-0 non-league victory over Mahanoy Area.

Clifford walked just one and struck out 12 to help the Blue Raiders improve to 3-4.

Hailey Williams had three hits, including a triple and homer, scored three runs and knocked in three. Lexi Thomas added a single, double, triple, two runs and an RBI.

The winners also received two hits, one a triple, and two runs from Riley Zeigenfuse, while Ella McLaughlin contributed a hit and two RBIs.

Panther Valley-Lehighton

Lehighton earned its first win of the season with a commanding 12-2 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

Abbie Miller was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple and three RBIs for the Indians (1-3; 1-2), while Maggie Paggotto added two doubles and knocked in five runs.

Winning pitcher Mia Snyder helped her own cause with four hits and four RBIs. In the circle, she allowed just three hits while striking out seven.

The Panthers (0-5; 0-4), who jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage, received a triple, run scored and RBI from Mikayla Yuricheck.

Jim Thorpe-Shenandoah Valley

Jim Thorpe used a five-fun fifth inning to pull away for an 11-4 non-league victory over Shenandoah Valley.

The Olympians batted around in the fifth, as Kristin Pompa started the inning with a single and later scored on Tara McLean’s two-run single. Trista Gehris and Christy McLean also added run-scoring hits.

Pompa finished with three hits and two RBIs for Thorpe (3-3), while Nadya Soliman contributed three hits, one a double, and an RBI. McLean ended the contest with three RBIs, and winning pitcher Amanda Goodchild - who only allowed four hits and struck out five- knocked in a pair.

Pleasant Valley-PM East

Pocono Mountain East exploded for 10 runs in the sixth inning to gain a 12-2 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

The Bears (0-3) had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before the disastrous sixth frame.

Emily Roberti had a double and an RBI for PV, while Danica Getz added a hit, run and RBI.

The Cardinals were led by Olivia Handlelong, who finished with three hits, two runs and an RBI.

BOYS LACROSSE

Moravian Academy-Northwestern

Moravian Academy registered a 13-6 victory over Northwestern.

Drew Sabo paced the Tigers with three goals, while Austin Sosnovik added a goal and two assists.

Teammates Blaine Snyder (goal, assist), Noah Smargiassi (goal) and Taylor Wikert (11 ground balls) also contributed to the Tigers’ effort.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Northwestern-Moravian Academy

Ava Collin’s four goals sparked Northwestern to a 10-7 victory over Moravian Academy.

Claire Costa contributed to the win with three goals, while Alexis Vennera chipped in with two goals and an assist.

The Tigers’ Ali Lister (assist) and Sarah Schultz (goal, assist) also helped the cause.

Easton-Pleasant Valley

Easton rolled to a 19-5 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

Lea Krieger sparked the Red Rovers with six goals, while Lyndsay Geiger and Ava Milia each registered four goals.

Alexandra Bush led the Bears with two goals, while Brielle McInaw chipped in with a goal and an assist. Other PV goals came from Summer Storm and Riley Green.
