Youngsters have special day fishing at Leaser Lake

Taylor Schroeder, an Eagle Scout candidate with Troop 104, Krumsville, hosted some special needs children at the Accessible Recreation Area, Leaser Lake.

Cabela’s, in Hamburg, and Leaser Lake Heritage Foundation co-sponsor the troop.Other Scouts from the troop who volunteered for the day were Jacob Keller; and Rylan and Grayson Ebner.“It is more about having fun than catching fish,” said George White, chairman of the Heritage Foundation.Volunteers, adults and Scouts threw out the lines for the youngsters.Dale Zellner, who coaches with the Miracle League, contacted people he thought would like to go fishing, which was catch and release.Cabela’s Retail Marketing Manager Ron Leh said the store supports outdoor sports for youth and women. The store supplied six rods which will be kept by the Leaser Lake Heritage Foundation. There were also Cabela’s caps for the participants.“We’re looking at building on our success,” White said. He built rod holders and said they are just one of his inventions to make it easier. The pier was built by Lions Clubs International, Kempton Lions, Ontelaunee Lions and Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation. The water around the pier contained a lot of sunnies, and they could at times be seen nibbling at the bait.Three years ago Callen Walck, 6, was so shy he wouldn’t leave his mother, Zellner said, but after playing with the Miracle League and the two coaches, he became more outgoing and was even on television to raise money for the Miracle League. The Miracle League changes many kids for the better, said the coach, who has worked with the group for eight years.

Callen Walck, 6, of Lehighton, caught a sunny, but it got away. Jacob Keller was his volunteer helper. ELSA KERSCHNER/TIMES NEWS
