Cigarette was cause of fatal Schuylkill fire

A Schuylkill County woman died early Saturday morning when a fire erupted in her home, apparently caused by a cigarette.

State police at Schuylkill Haven identified the victim as Mildred Catherine Reedy, 61, of 321 Chestnut St., in the village of Arnot's Addition, New Castle Township, just outside Saint Clair.The victim called 911 about 6:33 a.m. to report a fire in her home. When firemen arrived on scene they were met with heavy flames coming from the front of the residence.Troopers said firefighters were unable to make entry to the home and save Reed due to the amount of heavy fire.Reedy was pronounced dead at 8:44 a.m. by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner Joseph Pothering of Minersville.Troopers said her body was found in the kitchen area. An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.It was determined the fire started in a front home of the home when a cigarette lit bedding.Reedy slept in the front room of the home and was on oxygen, fire officials said.Firemen brought the blaze under control in about 20 minutes. Damages were termed heavy to the front of the home.A state police fire marshal ruled the fire accidental.
