Bomber boys reach CL semis

Make it 10 straight wins.

And a spot in the Colonial League semifinals.

With each victory no less significant than the last, the Palmerton boys basketball team pushed its streak to double digits and added another chapter during its historic run with a 49-42 win over Salisbury in the Colonial League quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The fourth-seeded Blue Bombers will meet top seed Notre Dame Green Pond in the semis tonight at 7 p.m.

“First of all, we have to tip our hat to Salisbury, who played a great game. That was as good of a first-round game as you’re going to get between two teams that have won I think 18 of their last 21 games,” said Palmerton head coach Ken Termini. “I thought it was a very entertaining basketball game.

“Both teams played with a lot of heart and guts, but at the end we just had a little bit more, and we’re looking forward to the opportunity to move on.”

The Blue Bombers (12-4) trailed at the end of the first quarter (10-7) and at halftime (21-18).

Momentum started to shift early in the third quarter when Palmerton ripped off a 9-0 run to go ahead 27-24, its first advantage since holding a 14-13 edge in the second.

The Falcons (10-6) stayed in it, largely on the strength of the three-ball. Salisbury had eight treys - from four players - in the game, including two from Kenyo Herrera in the third to trail 32-31 entering the final period.

While the Bombers might have bent, they didn’t break.

“We did a good job, I thought, of taking away the middle on them,” said Termini. “They did get it inside a couple of times, and they were really hot from the outside.

“But we held them to 42 points, and three of them came right at the end. Even though they did hit those threes, those are tough shots and some nights they go in and some nights they don’t. Tonight they did and they kept it close, but we had enough at the end.”

Palmerton never wavered in a fourth quarter that saw four lead changes and was tied at 38-38 with 3:06 remaining.

Kody Kratzer converted a three-point play with a basket and the free throw to put the Bombers ahead for good at 41-38 with 2:32 remaining.

Kratzer finished with a game-high 21 points.

“The seniors really step up; when we have timeouts, we try to talk to each other, tell each other to play with more energy,” said Kratzer. “We try to help each other so that we can play better in those final minutes.”

Kratzer helped kick-start an 11-4 run for Palmerton to close out the game.

After going up 37-36 just past the midway point of the fourth quarter, Salisbury went without a field goal until Quintin Stephens hit a three in the final seconds.

“Defensively, rebounding was big,” said Kratzer. “This is a team that likes to run and grab a lot of offensive rebounds; they’re physical.

“So to grab a lot of defensive rebounds and try to leak out and push the ball up, it definitely helped a lot.”

Freshman Matt Machalik scored nine of his 12 points in the second half for the Bombers.

“This group is just a great bunch of guys,” said Machalik. “We gel really well together. To keep our poise and composure in these big games like this when it’s coming down to the end, I think it says a lot about us. Hopefully we can just keep it going.”

IN BUNCHES … Kyle Artis scored nine of his 11 points for the Falcons in the second quarter, all on three-pointers. Quinn Warmkessel also had 11 points for Salisbury.

THE FIRST TIME … Salisbury knocked off Palmerton 58-41 on Jan. 19.

AMONG THE BEST … Notre Dame’s Brendan Boyle was recently voted the Colonial League MVP. Kratzer was also honored with a First Team all-league selection.

UNKNOWN … The Crusaders and Blue Bombers did not play during the regular season.

SPECIAL WIN ... While basketball might have been his main focus Tuesday, Termini also was thinking about the team’s freshman Aiden Haupt, who lost everything in a house fire Monday. “Aiden Haupt and your family, I hope that you were able to enjoy tonight,” the coach said.
