The Delano Fire Company 1 held a memorial ceremony Friday for one of Delano Village's most beloved and known residents, John "Doc" Dougherty who passed away last February, and had served with the fire department for over 25 years.

As part of the ceremony, the bell was rung as Doc's final call, a firefighter tradition signaling the end of the journey and release of duty for the honoree.The Dougherty family presented two firefighter statutes to be displayed by the monument outside the Delano Fire Company. One statue reads, "Presented to the Delano Fire Co. No. 1 in memory of John 'Doc' Dougherty," and the other reads, "In honor of all Volunteer Firefighters."The ceremony included Delano Fire Company President Leo Walters; Fire Chief Scott Derr, who rang the bell; Assistant Fire Chief John Wolfgang, who explained the meaning of the bell for firefighters; and Chief Engineer Brian Hettler.June Arnold, Doc's sister, addressed those gathered."For those of you who did not know our brother John Dougherty, he was the prime example of a true American," Arnold said. "John was a young man during the second World War, he saw many examples of patriotism during that time, and he followed those examples in his own life."Arnold said he worked for 35 years for the federal government in Indiantown Gap."He could have moved, but he loved Delano. He would rather drive and share the ride with others than leave Delano. When he was home and able, if the fire siren would sound, he would run to the firehouse and respond with the men," Arnold said.She said Dougherty had a bout with polio early in his life, which made it difficult to do certain things, but his limitations didn't stop him from serving.Dougherty served as treasurer for the Delano Fire Company for many years, as well as other fire departments in the area."He had a good example to follow. Our father, John Dougherty Sr. was a founding member of this fire company."Arnold continued, "Many referred to John as Mr. Delano, or the mayor of Delano, he was liked and respected by so many. John was the patriarch of our family. He was so loved by our family members. His passing has left a hole in all of our hearts."Arnold thanked those who helped Doc with tasks of life when he was in need, due to age and physical limitations, especially Joe Sandova, uncle and good friend to Doc.Arnold volunteers with the Lehigh County Citizens Corps Council, Lehigh Valley Crime Stoppers, and as an EMT with the local ambulance corps."If I as a 76-year-old woman can volunteer, you young people can do the same for your local fire department," Arnold said.The Delano Fire Company also honored members of the Dougherty family and members of the community for their continued support and involvement with the fire company.Those who received certificates of appreciation are: Lori Yesenofski, Helen Geisler, Doc's niece Jessica Barrett, Doc's sisters June Arnold and Grace Cady, and Doc's niece Angel Firmstone.
