Good news and needs

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network has both good news and needs to share.

The good news is the acquisition of a brand-new box truck built to PVEN’s exact specifications. It will help in PVEN’s food reclamation and recycling work.

More good news is that PVEN partners with Meals on Wheels, as of this month, are jointly serving 20 clients, who qualify for both PVEN and Meals on Wheels criteria.

To contact both organizations, call PVEN at 570-992-3136 and MOW at 570-424-8794, ext. 155.

The needs for PVEN, shares Colleen Walsh, operations manager, for the food pantry include: pasta sauce, mashed potatoes, canned pasta and cake/brownie mix. Needs for the clothing closet include baby items for sizes 0 to 3 months and 3-6 months, baby wipes, onesies, sleep and play outfits, blankets, swaddlers, hooded towels, washcloths and booties.

Sugar bush time

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center has announced its maple sugaring programs for schools, groups and Scouts.

Two-hour tours include stops at stations providing information on the history of maple sugaring, which dates back to the Native Americans, the evaporating process used today and it provides the groups with the opportunity to tap a maple tree whose sap will be used in the 2021 maple syrup production. Also shown are methods of collecting maple sap, and finally, the cooking process that produces the sweet maple syrup. Dates this year for organized groups have been set for March 1 through March 12. Call 570-629-3061 for cost and to schedule a visit.

Scout programs may also be scheduled during public day programs on March 6 and March 13. Preregistration is required for a group to reserve a spot by Feb. 24.

Due to COVID-19 protocols, all program participants are required to wear a mask during the program.

Additional information may be obtained by calling 570-629-3061, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or visit the website www.mcconservation.org for more programs being offered.
