The former Tiki Bar will be getting a face-lift.
The building, at 20 E. Mauch Chunk St., had been vacant about a year before the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership purchased it for $23,000 in October 2013. In February 2014, Tamaqua's Zoning Hearing Board granted a change of use from business to residential for the structure, which is within the town's historic district.During a meeting Monday, Tamaqua's Historical and Architectural Review Board said that the TACP could remove the twin dormers on the second floor. The cost to repair and replace the structures was exorbitant, which created a hardship for the TACP, which hopes to remodel and sell the building as a residence. It's located in a "safety corridor" defined by the Tamaqua Safety Initiative. The area runs from south to north from Spruce to Center streets to Mauch Chunk Street, and includes the 100 blocks of Pine and Railroad streets.
