A Nesquehoning man faces charges for a crash he caused last year after he huffed Ultra Duster.

Matthew David Coughlin, 24, of East Center Street was charged by Nesquehoning police earlier this month for his part in a crash on April 5. He faces charges of driving under the influence of a solvent or noxious substance and careless driving.According to the affidavit, filed by Chief Sean Smith, he was dispatched to the unit block of West Catawissa Street just before 12:30 p.m. for a reported crash with an unconscious driver.Upon arrival, Smith saw that a blue Mercury Sable had struck a pickup that was legally parked.He spoke with the driver, identified as Coughlin, as well as a witness who heard the crash and came out to help Coughlin. The witness, who is an EMT, told Smith that as she began to speak with Coughlin, noticed that he appeared to be under the influence of something.Smith looked at Coughlin and also noticed he appeared to be under the influence. Coughlin said that he did not do any drugs, but admitted that he huffed a can of Ultra Duster at his girlfriend's house before driving.Coughlin said that after that, he was driving when he blacked out and did not remember anything until after the crash.He was taken to St. Luke's Miners Campus for testing and treatment. Hospital personnel discovered Coughlin sustained severe injuries, including internal bleeding and was flown to St. Luke's Bethlehem Campus.Blood test results showed that Coughlin did not have a controlled substance in his system.A preliminary hearing before District Judge Edward Lewis has been scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Jan. 25.
