With the temperature dipping below freezing overnight, Jim Thorpe Borough is planning a last-minute update to its snow ordinance before the first measurable flakes start to fall.
Last week, borough council announced its intent to ban parking on the even side of the street in even numbered years during a "snow event."Motorists would then be banned from parking on the odd side of the street in odd numbered years.According to an ordinance up for vote at Jim Thorpe's Nov. 12 council meeting, a snow event will be called when 2 or more inches of snow falls, or when an "appreciable amount of snow" is predicted.Residents will be notified of a snow event by the Borough's Swift Reach Telephone Call Out System. The borough's original plan was to ban parking on the even side of the street no matter the year."We received some comments from residents and decided it would be more fair to alternate sides of the street," Mayor Michael Sofranko said. "That way the same people won't be forced to move their car every storm."A second phone call will take place when the snow emergency ends.Residents who violate the ordinance can be fined $25 plus costs. The current system involves one side of the street being cleared of parked cars depending on whether the storm falls on an odd or even day of the month. The opposite side of the street is then plowed the following day.
