The groundhog says ... six more weeks

Above, Schnogadahl Sammi I predicted six more weeks of winter Sunday at sunrise. She may be a stuffed groundhog, but she saw her shadow and channeled her prognostication to Harold Kreger, left, of Grundsau Lodge Nummer Sexa (Groundhop Lodge Number 6). Kreger gave the prognostication in Pennsylvania German, while Lodge Vice President Robert Andrews, center, translated for the crowd that gathered in back of Cherry's Sunset Family Restaurant, Kresgeville. Lodge Haaptmann President Lee Haas said he asked Sammi if she could give a prediction about the Super Bowl game and she said that she had many relatives near the Meadowlands but they were frozen in and couldn't say.

Below, Schnogadahl Sammi is always a big hit with the kids on Groundhog Day, who could care less that she has been making weather predictions since 1995. From left, Waylon Van Buskirk, 8, from Kresgeville, comes every year to "pet" Sammi. Logan Keller, 12 of Kunkletown, says Groundhog Day is his favorite holiday because he likes groundhogs and thinks they're funny. Emma Kintz, 10 of Stroudsburg, came to the event for the first time and thought it was fun. Katie Fritz, 5 of Kresgeville really liked Sammi.
