Fire prevention should be practiced each and every day of the year, students at Tamaqua Elementary were told during a fire prevention program Thursday as part of Fire Prevention Week activities.

Volunteers from Citizens Fire Company, East End Fire Company, South Ward Fire Company and American Hose Company met with the students.One by one, the students took turns practicing the stop, drop and roll concept, according to Chris Hadesty, fire and life safety educator.As part of the activities, students had a balloon tied around their waist, crawled through a window while blindfolded, and practiced dialing 911 to speak with an operator, giving their name, address, phone number and describing the emergency, Hadesty said.Outside, the students were given fire apparatus demonstrations, much to their delight."I like all the red firetrucks," said second-grader Karma Wade. "Maybe if you want to be a firefighter, they can show you all the stuff."Fellow second-grader Shane Price said he also enjoyed the fire apparatus demonstrations."I like looking at the firetrucks," Shane said. "If there's a fire, you know what to do."Hadesty said, "Fire prevention is a yearlong thing.""We're fortunate that we have a very low fire loss," Hadesty said. "I attribute it to aggressive fire prevention and education."Firefighters were also scheduled to conduct a fire prevention program Wednesday at St. Jerome Regional School in Tamaqua.
