A Lehighton man is accused of passing a bad check to bilk another person out of nearly $5,000.

John McLaughlin, 47, faces charges of bad checks, theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received, and receiving stolen property.According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by patrolman Scott Ledo of the Walnutport Police Department:On Oct. 29, McLaughlin came to the EZ CASH at 255 S. Best Ave. in Walnutport, to cash a check from MP&A LLC of Quakertown in the amount of $5,000. The victim received a letter from the bank that the check could not be deposited due to a "Stop Payment" on the check.After the victim tried to contact McLaughlin several times by phone and mail, McLaughlin made a $125 payment on the $5,000, plus a $25 returned check cost on Dec. 23.However, McLaughlin failed to make any other payments on the $4,900 that he still owed.On Jan. 20, the victim reported a bad check to the Walnutport Police Department.Ledo contacted McLaughlin who told him he would be seeing the owner of MP&A LLC on Jan. 28 to get the matter straightened out.Ledo gave McLaughlin some additional time to contact him or make restitution on the bad check.On Feb. 7, restitution had not been made, and McLaughlin, said he would get the matter resolved the next day. When Ledo tried to call McLaughlin, his phone had been disconnected.McLaughlin was arraigned Wednesday by District Judge Robert Hawke of Northampton, who set bail at $35,000.He is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility.His preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 10.
