Three defendants entered guilty pleas to driving under the influence charges on Tuesday in Carbon County court.
Judge Steven R. Serfass accepted the pleas from the following:Shane G. Smith, 43, of Palmerton, was arrested on May 16along Princeton Avenue by Palmerton police. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.Serfass sentenced him to serve 90 days to 60 months in prison, a fine of $1,500, his license was suspended for 18 months and he must render 100 hours of community service.Smith is currently an inmate in the county prison on other charges and is facing a probation violation proceeding.Robert Edward Horn, 39, of White Haven, was arrested on Nov. 23by state police at Lehighton on Maury Road in Penn Forest Township during a sobriety checkpoint operation. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.Sentencing was deferred so Horn can obtain a comprehensive drug and alcohol evaluation.Shirley Ann Michno, 66, of Lehighton, was arrested on Dec. 1by state police at Lehighton along Mountain View Circle in Penn Forest Township. A test revealed a 0.29 BAC.A first offense, she was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000, a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole and follow all recommendations of their drug and alcohol evaluation.
