School buses, SUV crash in Schuylkill
Two school buses and a sport utility vehicle were involved in a collision on Wednesday in Schuylkill County in which three students sustained minor injuries.
State police at Frackville said the crash occurred at 2:25 p.m. along Route 61 South, near the New Castle and Blythe township line.According to troopers, buses operated by Cynthia Urzillo of Orwigsburg and Camille Yoder of Forestville and a 2006 Kia Sportage SUV driven by John Turner Jr., of Pottsville, were all southbound in a portion of the road that is commonly referred to as the "Frackville grade."As the three traveled south they encountered a one-vehicle crash which partially blocked the roadway. Yoder and Turner were able to stop, however Urzillo lost control of her bus when she applied the brakes on black ice.The 2012 Thomas Built bus slid sideways and hit the second bus, a 2011 Thomas Built. The roof on the driver's side toward the rear of the Urzillo bus struck the rear passenger side of the second bus. After impact, Urzillo steered toward a rock embankment and hit the Kia, which was stopped in the right lane due to a backlog of traffic. The bus then climbed the embankment, where it came to rest. Both buses, owned by R&J Transportation of Cressona, were occupied by students being transported home from the Schuylkill Technology Center-North Campus in Frackville. The bus operated by Urzillo contained three students, with two taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street in Pottsville for treatment of minor injuries. The bus driven by Yoder had 15 students with one taken to the same hospital for minor injuries. None of the drivers or Turner's passenger, his wife Megan, were injured.Troopers said Urzillo will be cited for driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed. Damages to Urzillo's bus were moderate, with minor damages to the second bus and the SUV.Frackville troopers were assisted at the scene by troopers from the Schuylkill Haven barracks and volunteers from the Englewood, Citizens and Altamont fire companies. A Schuylkill Transportation System bus was also on scene in case any of the students needed transportation, however it was not needed as the bus operated by Yoder was drivable. The other bus was towed. The Kia was also driven from the scene. The one-vehicle crash that the buses came upon involved a 2007 Lincoln Town Car operated by Robert Neary of Frackville. He was driving south at 2:20 p.m. when he lost control on black ice while negotiating a sharp right curve. The front of the Lincoln hit a rock embankment on the west side of the road. The rear of the car then hit and damaged a guide rail on the east side.Neary was not injured, but damages to the car were termed major. He was cited for driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed.
