Blue Mountain Ski Area states future plans

From concerts, to festivals, to a new water park, Blue Mountain Ski Area wants to be a premier entertainment destination.

Exactly how it plans to get there was shared on Tuesday as part of a networking event with the Lehigh, Bath, East Allen, and Moore (LeBEAM) Chamber of Commerce, and Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.Barbara Green, president, Blue Mountain Ski Area, gave a presentation on a 20-year plan that detailed future happenings at the ski area.Green began with a historical background, in which she noted that between 1962-1974, her father, the late Ray Tuthill, purchased 322.55 acres, with dreams of opening a ski area.In 1974, Tuthill Corporation became incorporated. In 1977, the mountain opened, and was named Little Gap.Green said that in 1986, an additional 131.06 acres were acquired, and in 1988, Little Gap was renamed to "Blue Mountain." Then, in 1992, an additional 245.62 acres were acquired, followed by another 61.88 acres in 2003.After her father passed away in 2007, Green said she became president.Green said the experiences Blue Mountain sells, and plans to sell, include water sports (Summit Splash); winter sports (skiing, boarding, tubing, luge, ice skating); mountain sports (biking, disc golf, amazing maze, day camp, rope courses, zip lines); hospitality (Slope Side Pub & Grill); weddings and meetings (proms, reunions, birthday parties); and special events (biking, Father's Day, Spartan, Blues Festival, Wine & Beer Festival, October Fest, Terror on the Mountain).She said the mission is to "give our guests and employees a wonderful experience that lasts a lifetime and keeps them coming back."Green then presented a development timeline in which she said that from the present to 2015, Blue Mountain will continue automating snowmaking, and the sewer plant will expand in 2014.Preliminary work on Blue Mountain's new Summit Splash Water Park is under way, said Green, who added that construction on a new entrance is expected to be complete in time for this year's ski season, with electric, sewer and water work done by the end of the year. She said work will begin on the attractions in 2014.The water park should be open by May of 2015, said Green, who added it should yield about 40 new full-time jobs.She said that from 2016-2020, a new trail to the left of Paradise will open in 2016; a water park ride will be added in 2016; the Summit Learning Center will open in 2017; the Summit Lodge will expand in 2018; and the Summit Hotel will open in 2019.Green said that from 2021-2025, an additional lift will be added; the Valley Lodge area will be redone; and four more trails will be added.After her presentation, the networking event began. A cash bar was available, and appetizers were served.
